Help Improve Mathematics Education
Join a nationwide study designed to help instructional leaders understand and support high-quality curriculum implementation and improve mathematics teaching and learning in the middle grades.
-
Deepen Curricular Understanding
Work with our research team to investigate what it means to implement complex mathematics curricula as intended.
-
Resources to fund professional learning aligned with district needs
Each district will receive an annual professional learning stipend, payable at the beginning of the school year, to use at your discretion to support implementation of your district’s middle school mathematics curriculum.

Join a Community of Math Educators
Collaborate with peers, sharing insights and driving collective educational progress.
Strengthen Your District
Math instructional leaders know that it takes considerable time and resources to monitor and support teachers to implement complex math programs as intended. Implementation and the needs of teachers and students often varies within and across schools.
Join WestEd’s Mathematics Efficacy Study and receive professional support for instructional leaders and resources for educators in grades 6-8 as well as data to understand and improve implementation with integrity. We are recruiting interested districts now through Summer 2024.
The study will include districts using Illustrative Mathematics (IM) and several other high-quality middle school math curricula and will examine the relationship between curriculum implementation and student outcomes.
We are recruiting now through Spring 2024 for interested districts.
About the Mathematics Efficacy Study
WestEd is on a mission to enhance education through research and innovation. This study will contribute much-needed evidence about the effects of core mathematics programs on student outcomes. Such evidence is critical for the STEM, math education, and standards-based reform research and policy communities.
This study will help the field understand what it means to implement complex middle school mathematics curricula as intended. WestEd will partner with districts and schools, some implementing the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum and some implementing other high-quality mathematics curricula. Over a two-year period, the study will examine the relationship between curriculum implementation and student academic outcomes and attitudinal outcomes (such as motivation, engagement, and persistence), assessing impact after one year and two years of curriculum implementation. The study will also provide insight on the types of district and school supports (including data for improvement and professional development) that may facilitate implementation integrity.
Study Organizations
This study is being led by WestEd, a nonpartisan research, development, and service agency that works with education and other communities to promote excellence, achieve equity, and improve learning for children, youth, and adults. The study is made possible with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
